It’s been a minute, and lots of life stuff has certainly slowed blog activity lately, but I’m back with a few projects I’ve had in the works to share here.

Up first in this post, I’ll be sharing the Crochet Drawstring Book Pouch pattern. It’s big enough to easily fit regular paperback books of 5.5 x 8.5 inches (Approx. 14 x 22 cm), but a standard hardback will fit comfortably enough unless it’s a tad too thick. This pouch can, of course, be used for anything you’d like, but I designed it with books in mind.

(Note: When I start any instructions down below, I will begin with US English instructions and put the UK English instructions after.))

Materials

Materials:

6.0mm hook (US-J/10; UK/Canada-4)
medium weight yarn (worsted weight in US; Aran yarn in UK; 10-ply in Australia)
tapestry needle

Notes and Abbreviations

Notes:

  1. Drawstring openings will be added every row, alternating which end of the working piece they appear in.
  2. The color sequences in this pattern will appear as Color A through D; use this to assign your own color sequence as desired.
  3. In the 4-color, 2-panel version of the pattern, pull the yarn end toward you in the color changes on the middle of the SC (DC in UK terms) rows so they are on the back of the working piece when doing the cluster rows.
  4. Each cluster stitch in this pattern is a 5DC (5TR) stitch, but it will be labeled simply as CL in the pattern instructions. Directions for how to make this cluster stitch is provided below.
  5. The cord is constructed of herringbone stitches. A link to the instructions used will be provided.

Crochet Drawstring Book Pouch Instructions

I made three versions of the pattern! One done in one color. One done in four colors that will mirror each other when each side of the pouch is compared; this one will require color changes at the ends of rows only. And one done in four colors that will have the same color sequence when each side of the pouch is compared; this one will require color changes in the middle of the working piece.

Instructions for finishing touches, the drawstring cord link, and assembly are provided at the very end of both US and UK English pattern versions.

Finishing Touches and Assembly

Closing:

Fold the one-piece panel in half by bringing the two narrower sides together to form a smaller rectangle, ensuring that the drawstring openings are aligned and that it is folded so the side with the cluster stitch bumps is on the inside of your fold. If your pouch is made with multi-color rows, this will leave you with vertical rows when done.

Using your tapestry needle and 1 1/2 to 2 yards of yarn (color of your choosing), sew along the longer side to close the pouch, weave it loosely along the folded side of the piece to hide the yarn, then continue sewing up the other long side. Leave the narrow end of your pouch open. End off your yarn and weave in the yarn end.

Turn the bag right-side out, ensuring the cluster stitches face outward.

Herringbone Stitch Cord:

You can use any sort of stitch you’d like to make your cord, but I used the Herringbone Cord instructions by The Knotty Boss. You can find the video and pattern instructions here: Instagram video. For this pouch, I kept the minimum length of the cord to 34 inches (Approx. 87cm), though some I made a little longer.

Assembly:

Weave your cord through the drawstring openings, alternating which hole you go into and which you come out from. Ensure that your loose ends come out at the center of one of your sides.
